Marie-Madeleine Martin
Marie-Madeleine Martin (1914–1998) was the daughter of a local historian and a former student of the École des Chartes. She received two literary prizes for her first work, which was published while she was still a student. Six years later, she obtained the Grand Prix Gobert d'Histoire from the Académie française, for her Histoire de l'unité française. She was the first woman to receive this award. She wrote more than thirty-five books and, from 1963, was awarded by the Académie française for all of her historical work. She was a candidate for the Académie française in 1978 (a year before Marguerite Yourcenar).
